The moral of the story for PAP is that threats, gerrymandering and instituting unfair policies in the name of fair governance is not going to hoodwink the future generations of educated voters anymore.
Just like George Yeo, Ng Chee Meng unfortunately had to bear the brunt of the electorate’s retaliation to the PAP’s outdated approach of using their super-majority control to consolidate power at the expense of losing the peoples’ heart. (although both GY and NCM are well-liked, good-natured, smart and dedicated MPs and ministers)
With a 83-10 and 61.2% win, that is still a solid mandate and the PAP still has the super-majority power and control to implement constitutions and policies that are truly beneficial for the nation.
But if they continue to subtly abuse that power rather than using it to really do good with the best unselfish intentions, the sharp eyes of the educated next-generation electorate will see through it and we will continue to lose good PAP MPs and ministers in the years to come.
When this trend starts and go on long enough, PAP will lose their super-majority power and continue to drift to the point of us having a 50-50 kind of balance between two strong opposing parties. This will definitely do more harm than good in the long run for the country because of the inherent conflicts of interest between two opposing and equally powerful parties.
Regardless of what the opposition party might say right now that they are objective, balanced and truly has the heart for the country, wait till the day that they are just a few seats from kicking out the incumbents and forming the government, then we’ll see if their main motivation for exercising their votes and voices in the parliament, is to satisfy their power/greed, or truly for the people’s best interest.
Honestly, I do not wish to see that day arriving, because it will most likely just set an irreversible outcome of the kind of two parties power politics that we see in the western world that makes life more worse-off for their people in the long run.
Don’t get what I mean? Just imagine having two equally powerful wives fighting for your attention at home and see if your home will become harmonious and well-managed in the long run…..
