COVID-19 Update: Singapore extends Circuit Breaker to 1st June 2020

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong made an announcement to address the nation at 4pm on 21st April 2020 through his Facebook Page at 4pm.

At 5pm, he addressed the nation via TV, Radio & Facebook Live.

Key Points from PM Lee

  • The general measures of Circuit Breaker is working as the number of local infections are getting lower.
  • Foreign workers are being aggressively tested, situation is getting under control.
  • Most people do abide by the measures, there is a small number of people who have continued to flout measures.
  • Circuit Breaker will be extended to 1st June 2020.
  • More workplaces will be closed, with very essential services remaining.
  • Do expect a degradation of services due to the closures.
  • Reduce crowding, especially at supermarkets & wet markets by buying on weekdays.
  • People are to stay at home to be safe, especially elderly and sick who have less effective immunity.
  • No one knows when the pandemic will end. We have to be prepared.
  • We will open up slowly, with safety in mind at every step of the way, much like Germany and New Zealand.

    Task Force Updates

    Movement Control

    • Crowd control at certain places like wet markets, using the last digit of NRIC to allow entry on odd or even days.
    • Essential services to be cut from 20% to 15%.
    • Leave the house for essential tasks, not in groups or as a family but alone. Head home immediately after the tasks.

    Medical Services

    • Hospitals are prepared to handle the increased load from foreign worker infections.
    • Forward Assurance Teams (FAST) and medical teams have been deployed at all 43 dormitories.

    Foreign Worker Dormitories

    • Workers in all dormitories are to stop work to minimize cross-transmissions by movement.
    • Essential workers are now housed separately.
    • Arrangements of meals during Ramadan have been made.

    Solidarity Budget

    • Wage subsidy of Jobs Support Scheme expanded to all sectors, extended to the month of May.
    • Working directors to be included in Jobs Support Scheme.
    • Waive Foreign Worker Levy for May and provide another $750 levy rebate per foreign worker for businesses.
    • COVID-19 Support Grant & Temporary Relief Fund available from 1st of May for breadwinners who have lost their jobs due to COVID-19.
